About Teach Recovery
Teach Recovery provides mental health professionals with information about cognitive health in people with psychiatric disorders. Although cognitive health is increasingly recognized as essential for independent daily functioning, clinical practice still lacks clear, actionable guidance on how it’s best addressed in clinical practice. Clinicians want the tools to recognize cognitive problems and their impact, and the knowledge base for successful implementation of recovery-oriented cognitive interventions.
Teach Recovery was designed for mental health professionals who are involved in the clinical care of people with psychiatric disorders. Learners have access to a range of training materials rooted in research and years of clinical expertise. On our web-based platform, learners across the globe have access to an informative, illustrative and interactive set of courses that bridge clinical science and clinical practice. Teach Recovery empowers professionals and mental health agencies to integrate effective cognitive intervention approaches with routine clinic practice, thereby optimizing mental health service outcomes for their clientele.

Dr. Medalia is an international leader in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation, who focuses on the treatment of cognitive disorders in psychiatric illness. She developed the widely used NEAR (Neuropsychological & Educational Approach to Remediation) model to help people with mental illness improve their thinking skills in such areas as attention, memory, processing speed and problem solving. Dr. Medalia works with policy makers, researchers, clinicians, families and patients to bring awareness about the impact of cognitive dysfunction on recovery. Her research focuses on the factors that impact a successful recovery from severe mental illness. Dr. Medalia’s contributions as a neuropsychologist, researcher and advocate of cognitive remediation have won her awards from professional and advocacy groups.

Dr. Herlands joined Columbia University in 2007 to take part in the development of the Lieber Recovery Clinic and was appointed Clinical Director. She contributes to clinician manual development, supervises clinicians and lectures regularly on a broad range of topics related to rehabilitation and recovery in psychotic disorders, intrinsic motivation, and cognition.

Dr. Saperstein conducts research which guides clinical program development to address cognitive health in adults with neuropsychiatric conditions. She routinely provides training and implementation support to mental health professionals seeking to understand and employ best practices to treat cognitive impairment in people with psychiatric conditions. Dr. Saperstein is a licensed psychologist at the Lieber Recovery Clinic where she facilitates cognitive remediation and executive functioning skills training groups.

Therapist
Ms. Gertmenian-King is a licensed clinical social worker who worked at the Lieber Recovery Clinic from 2008-2022. She developed curricula for groups to address executive functioning, motivation and self-esteem problems for individuals with ADHD as well as for those with mood and psychotic disorders. Currently, Ms. King has a clinical practice and continues to help people who wish to improve their executive functioning.
